Notes: Baker came to Minnesota in 1857, settling in Blue Earth County. He resigned his position of Secretary of State on November 17, 1862 to serve in the Union Army as a colonel of the 10th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. President Ulysses Grant appointed Baker United States Commissioner of Pensions which he served as from 1871 to 1874. Baker was a leader of the Farmers' Alliance movement of the 1880s.
