Senator Shipstead was reelected to a second term. This election is one of four in Minnesota history without a Democratic candidate (1918, 1936, 1936-special).

Nelson was an attorney from St. Paul and former Mayor of St. Paul (1922-1926).

Dunne was a resident of Minneapolis who previously was a Farmer-Labor candidate for the 5th CD in the 1928 cycle. Dunne was also the Socialist nominee for Secretary of State in 1936 and the Socialist Workers nominee for U.S. Senate in 1948, 1952, and 1954. Dunne was nominated by petition.
