Calero was a former meat packer who came from his home country of Nicaragua to the United States in 1985 and was thus ineligibile to win the presidency, but still appeared on some state ballots. Calero was the Socialist Workers nominee for U.S. Senate in New York in 2006 and for the 15th Congressional District in New York in 2010.
