Notes: Townley's year of birth is listed as 1879 on his death certificate but 1880 on his World War II Draft Registration Card and in newspaper obituaries. Townley was a founder of the Nonpartisan League in North Dakota and influentialspeaker and political figure in the Upper Midwest. He was also a Republican candidate for North Dakota's 3rd CD in 1930, for North Dakota U.S. Senate in 1944, and independent candidate for a North Dakota At-Large U.S. house seat in 1944, an Independent Republican candidate for North Dakota U.S. Senate in 1956, a Republican candidate for a North Dakota At-Large U.S. House seat in 1958, and an independent candidate for North Dakota U.S. Senate in 1958.
