The was an open seat race as Governor Pawlenty and Lieutenant Governor Molnau did not run for a third term.
Emmer was an attorney from Delano and state Representative (HD 19B, 2005-2011); Meeks was a Metropolitan Council member from Minneapolis, former Deputy Chief of Staff to U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich (1995-1998), and conservative pundit and think tank president.
Carney was a journalist from Minneapolis, candidate for U.S. Senate in 2012, and candidate for the 5th CD in 2018; McGaughey was a perennial candidate from Minneapolis and the Independence Party U.S. House nominee for the 5th CD in 2008.
Davis was an environmental activist from Minneapolis, Nutrition Rights Alliance gubernatorial nominee in 1994, Independence Party candidate for U.S. Senate in 2000, GOP candidate for governor in 2002, and American Party of Minnesota gubernatorial nominee in 2006; Soderberg was an environmentalist, author from Austin, and Davis’ Lieutenant Governor running mate in 2006.
Savior was a perennial candidate from Minneapolis and DFL gubernatorial candidate in 1998, 2002, and 2006; Anderson was an Elvis impersonator from Minneapolis.
