Associate Justice Meyer was reelected to a third term. Meyer resigned effective August 10, 2012 and returned to private practice shortly thereafter. Governor Mark Dayton appointed Wilhelmina Wright to fill the vacancy effective October 16, 2012. Wright was a Minnesota Court of Appeals Judge (2002-2012), former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota, and former Second Judicial District Judge (2000-2002). She was the first African-American woman to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
Wersal was an attorney from Belle Plaine, candidate for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1998, and nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 2000.
