Governor Freeman was the fourth Minnesota governor to lose a general election joining Democratic-People’s Governor John Lind in 1900, Farmer-Laborite Elmer Benson in 1938, and Republican C. Elmer Anderson in 1954.
Andersen was a business executive from St. Paul and former state Senator (SD 42, 1949-1959).
Gustafson was a resident of Duluth and Industrial Government nominee for Governor in 1946, 1948, and 1956. He was nominated by petition.
