Minnesota held its first state run presidential primary since 1916. The new presidential primary law was passed by the Republican controlled legislature in 1949 in part to bolster the national prospects of former GOP Governor Harold Stassen. Unlike the 1916 primary, voters were not required to disclose their party preference and the primaries for both major parties were printed on a single ballot.
