Associate Justice Christianson was appointed to the Court on May 15, 1950 by Governor Luther Youngdahl to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Associate Justice Harry Peterson on May 11, 1950 to run for the DFL nomination for governor. Christianson was an attorney from St. Paul and son of former state Representative, Governor, and U.S. Representative, Theodore Christianson, Sr.

Nolan was an attorney from Duluth, sitting Eleventh Judicial District Judge since 1937, and former state Representative (HD 61, 1929-1931, 1933-1937).

Gustafson was an attorney from Minneapolis, nominee for HD 29 in 1944, and DFL candidate for Attorney General in 1954.
