Harry Peterson was an attorney in St. Paul, former Ramsey County Attorney, former Farmer-Laborite state Attorney General (1933-1936), and state Supreme Court Justice (1936-1950).

Halsted was a grocer from Brainerd, state Representative (HD 53, 1937-1947; 1953-1967), 1948 Democratic gubernatorial nominee, and party-endorsed candidate in this race.

Hjalmar Petersen was an editor and publisher from Askov, former state Representative (HD 56, 1931-1935), Farmer-Laborite Lieutenant Governor (1935-1936) and Governor (1936-1937), former Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner (1937-1943), Farmer-Laborite gubernatorial candidate in 1938 and nominee in 1940 and 1942 and Republican gubernatorial candidate in 1946.
