Governor Youngdahl was reelected to a third term but resigned on September 8, 1951 to accept an appointment to the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia (1951-1978). Republican Lieutenant Governor C. Elmer Anderson succeeded him.
Harry Peterson was an attorney in St. Paul, former Ramsey County Attorney, former Farmer-Laborite state Attorney General (1933-1936), and state Supreme Court Justice (1936-1950).
Campbell was a beauty shop proprietor from Winona. He was nominated by petition.
