Peterson was a resident of Minneapolis, funeral director, and former vice president of the Minneapolis Park Board. Peterson was endorsed by the regular "pro-Truman" wing of the DFL party.
Totten was an attorney from Minneapolis, former state's attorney and judge of the Bowman County Court (North Dakota), and Democratic candidate for the 3rd CD in 1942. Totten was endorsed by the progressive "pro-Wallace" wing of the DFL.
