Auditor King was reelected to a fourth term, tying the record held by Republican Charles McIlrath (1861-1873). King's 39.18-point win stands as the largest victory margin in the history of the state for the office besting Auditor Jacob A.O. Preus' 36.57-point victory in 1918. This was the only statewide office in which Farmer-Laborites did not field a nominee in 1942.

Kelly was a resident of Minneapolis.
