Governor Stassen was reelected to a second term.
Petersen was an editor and publisher from Askov, a former state Representative (HD 56, 1931-1935), Lieutenant Governor (1935-1936), and Governor (1936-1937), sitting Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner (1937-1943, 1955-1967), and gubernatorial candidate in 1938.
Murphy was a resident of St. Paul and was the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in 1942.
Castle was a resident of Winona, painter and decorator, and Industrial nominee for Governor in 1938.
Mackie was a resident of Virginia, Minnesota and state Chairman of the Communist Party. He was nominated at the state convention in June and ran a sticker campaign.
