Carpenter, a resident of Minneapolis, was the first woman to appear on a Minnesota primary or general election ballot for Lieutenant Governor. In 1928, she became the first woman nominated for the office of Secretary of State by the Democrats in Minnesota history. Carpenter came from the 'rumper' faction of the Democratic Party.
Johnshoy was a farmer from Starbuck and former state Representative (HD 47, 1923-1927).
