Benson was a former state Senator (SD 20, 1911-1915; SD 15, 1915-1923) and St. Peter attorney who was appointed attorney general by Governor Theodore Christianson in November 1929 after the resignation of Gustaf (G. Aaron) Youngquist.
Larson was an attorney from Minneapolis and former Benton County Attorney (1907-1908). Larson was a former four-time candidate for attorney general previously losing the Republican (1920, 1922, 1928) and Farmer-Laborite (1924) primaries.
