Hanson was a banker from Litchfield and former state Senator (SD 39, 1895-98).

Neary was a resident of Minneapolis, president of the Minnesota State Federation of Labor, and assistant gas inspector for the Minneapolis Gas Department.

Carlisle was a resident of Lake Benton.

Neary contested the election on the grounds Hanson violated the Corrupt Practices Act by allegedly offering the Assistant Secretary of State position to Minneapolis Deputy Internal Revenue Collector Peter Sjoblom while the GOP state convention was in session.
