Election by the state legislature with each chamber voting separately. Davis won 33 of 47 votes in the state Senate with Doran winning 14. Davus won 70 of 98 votes in the state House with 26 for Doran and two for Barton. The legislature declared Davis the duly elected U.S. Senator in a joint convention on January 19, 1887.
Davis was an attorney from St. Paul, former state Representative (HD01, 1867-1868), U.S. Attorney (1868-1873), and Governor (1874-1876).
Doran was a banker from Le Sueur and state Senator (SD 22, 1871-1872; SD 19, 1875-1881, 1883-1887).
Barton was a farmer from Northfield and former state Representative (HD 03, 1859; HD 08, 1871-1872; HD 18, 1872-1873).
