Notes: | Welch came to Minnesota from Madison, Wisconsin in 1882 locating in Minneapolis. Welch was state chair of the Wisconsin Whig Party in 1855. Welch befriended Abraham Lincoln while living in Springfield, Illinois in 1845. In March 1888, Welch was involved in a high profile criminal libel case instigated by U.S. Interior Secretary William F. Vilas in Hennepin County Court. Welch was found innocent and Vilas, a Democratic vice-presidential aspirant, failed to get the nomination for the office later that summer. |
