Notes: Schneiderman came to the United States with his family in 1907. He was a candidate for Minneapolis Alderman (6th Ward) in 1931 and later served as chairman of the Communist Party of California for a quarter century. The federal government attempted to revoke his citizenship in 1939 on the grounds Schneiderman did not reveal his communist affiliation on his 1927 application for naturalization. A federal judge upheld the revokement but 1940 Republican presidential nominee Wendell Willkie took up the case without a fee and won a 5-3 U.S. Supreme Court reversal in 1943 in Schneiderman's favor.
