Notes: | Atwater began practicing law in New York in 1848 and moved to St. Anthony Falls, Minnesota in 1850. He was the Whig nominee for the territorial legislature in 1851 but lost to William L. Larned. Atwater was also the editor and publisher of the Saint Anthony Express and was a member of the first Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota in 1851. Atwater resigned from the Minnesota Supreme Court on July 1, 1864 to move to the Nevada Territory to open a practice with fellow Justice Charles E. Flandrau. They returned to Minnesota and practiced law together until 1871. He was a member of the board of directors of schools (west division) from 1868 to 1878. |
