Newman was an attorney from Hutchinson and state Senator (SD 18, 2011-) and former state Representative (HD 18A, 2004-2007). Anderson was a resident of St. Paul. This was her ninth failed attempt to become the state attorney general, also losing the Independent-Republican primaries of 1982, 1986, and 1990, the 1994 general election, and the 1998, 2002, 2006, and 2010 Republican primaries.
