Nolan previously served Minnesota's 6th Congressional District from 1975 to 1981. Nolan was the 10th Minnesotan to serve nonconsecutive terms in the U.S. House and the first since 1938 (Republican William Pittenger). The 32-year gap between terms was the longest in state history with the previous long being 14 years (Republican turned Farmer-Laborite Ernest Lundeen).
