Dayton was a resident of Minneapolis and former state Commissioner of Department of Economic Development, DFL nominee for U.S. Senate in 1982, state Commissioner of Department of Energy and Economic Development, state Auditor (1991-1995), DFL candidate for governor in 1998, and U.S. Senator (2001-2007); Prettner-Solon was a psychologist from Duluth, former Duluth City Councilwoman (1988-1999), and sitting state Senator (SD 07, 2002-2011).

Anderson Kelliher, the DFL-endorsed candidate, was a state Representative (HD 60A, 1999-2011) and House Speaker (2007-2011) from Minneapolis; Gunyou was the Minnetonka City Manager and former state financial chief under Governor Arne Carlson.

Entenza was an attorney from St. Paul, former Assistant Minnesota Attorney General (1990-1994), and sitting state Representative (HD 64A, 1995-2007); Robinson was a Twin Cities news anchor and entrepreneur.

Idusogie was a businessman from Brooklyn Park.
