Swanson became the first woman to win the DFL nomination for Minnesota Attorney General. Swanson was Minnesota Solicitor General (2003-2007) and former Deputy Attorney General (1999-2003).

Kelley was a Hopkins lawyer, state Senator (SD 44, 1997-2007), and former state Representative (HD 44A, 1993-1997).

Luther was a former state Representative (HD 45B, 1975-1977), state Senator (SD 45, 1977-1983; SD 47 (1983-1995), and four-term U.S. Representative (6th District, 1995-2003).
