This was an open seat race with Attorney General Mike Hatch running for governor.
Swanson became the first woman elected to the position of Minnesota Attorney General. Swanson was Minnesota Solicitor General (2003-2007) and former Deputy Attorney General (1999-2003).
Johnson was a three-term state Representative (HD 34B, 2002-2003; HD43A, 2003-2007).
James was an attorney from Little Canada and former Commissioner of Revenue under Governor Rudy Perpich.
Kolstad was a Minneapolis musician.
