Senator Wellstone was renominated to a third term. Wellstone died in a plane crash on October 25, 2002 and former U.S. Senator and Vice-President Walter Mondale replaced Wellstone on the ballot.

Franson was a retired appraiser for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, former Minneapolis Alderman, and perennial candidate.

Erickson was a retired mechanical engineer from Chisholm and DFL candidate for U.S. Senate in 2008.
