Special primary election to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of DFL Senator Joe Bertram on January 9, 1996 while facing an expulsion vote regarding charges of bribery to get shoplifting charges dropped. Bertram had pled guilty to shoplifting a black leather vest in Stearns County District Court on September 29, 1995.
