Associate Justice Stringer was appointed to the Court on September 1, 1994 by Governor Arne Carlson to fill the vacancy after the retirement of Associate Justice Rosalie Wahl on August 27, 1994 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Stringer was an attorney from St. Paul, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Carlson (1992-1994), former executive at Pillsbury, and former general counsel at the U.S. Department of Education (1989-1991). Stringer resigned on August 31, 2002 to return to private practice. Governor Jesse Ventura appointed Sam Hanson to fill the vacancy effective September 3, 2002. Hanson was an attorney from Minneapolis.

Peterson was an attorney from Marine on St. Croix, former member of the Hennepin County Board of Park Commissioners (1958-1962), candidate for HD 32 in 1962, and nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1992 and 1998.
