Governor Carlson was renominated but Lieutenant Governor Joanell Dyrstad opted to run for U.S. Senate. Benson was a professor from St. Cloud and state Senator (SD 17, 1991-1993; SD 16, 1993-1995).
Quist was a farmer from Saint Peter and former state Representative (HD 23B, 1983-1989); McFarland was a law professor from Arden Hills.
