Attorney General Humphrey was reelected to a fourth and final term and would serve 16 years, tying J.A.A. Burnquist for the longest tenure in state history.

Anderson was the first woman to appear on a Minnesota general election ballot for attorney general. She had previously lost the Independent-Republican primaries of 1982, 1986, and 1990.

Amundson was a resident of Minneapolis and gay rights activist. He was nominated by petition.
