Associate Justice Wahl was reelected to a fourth term without opposition. Wahl retired on August 27, 1994 after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70. Governor Arne Carlson appointed Edward Stringer to fill the vacancy on September 1, 1994. Stringer was an attorney from St. Paul, Deputy Chief of Staff to Governor Carlson (1992-1994), former executive at Pillsbury, and former general counsel at the U.S. Department of Education (1989-1991).
