This was an open seat race as Governor Quie did not seek renomination.
Whitney was a resident of Independence who worked in the fields of health promotion and chemical dependency, was the GOP U.S. Senate nominee in 1964, and former Mayor of Wayzata (1963-1968); Krenik was a farmer from Madison Lake and Regent of the University of Minnesota.
Wangberg was a former school superintendent from Bemidji and sitting Lieutenant Governor (1979-1983); Lindau was the Mayor of Bloomington.
Stassen was a former three-term governor (1939-1943), former President of the University of Pennsylvania (1948-1953), candidate for Mayor of Philadelphia in 1959, for governor of Pennsylvania in 1966, for U.S. Senate in Minnesota in 1978, and for president nine times.
Crawford was an attorney from Inver Grove Heights and former Mayor of West St. Paul (1966-1970).
