Hanson was a resident of St. Paul who was self-employed in the investment industry. He campaigned to abolish the office.

Taylor was a resident of Minneapolis, worked in management for Time-Life Libraries, and the Chair of the Libertarian Party of Minnesota. She was nominated by petition.
