Stangeland was a farmer from Barnesville, former state Representative (HD 56, 1966-1967; HD 56B, 1967-1973; HD 09B, 1973-1975), and the party-endorsed candidate.
Franson was a resident of Minneapolis, former DFL Minneapolis alderman, and perennial candidate.
