This was the first Minnesota gubernatorial election following the passage of a 1972 constitutional amendment that provided for the joint election of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor (and removed the Lieutenant Governor as the presiding officer of the state Senate).
Governor Anderson was renominated along with Perpich – a dentist from Hibbing, former state Senator (SD 63, 1963-1971), and sitting Lieutenant Governor (1971-1976).
McDonald and his running mate Eakman were perennial candidates from Minneapolis who sued Governor Anderson in 1976 for conspiring to resign in order that Lieutenant Governor Rudy Perpich would appoint him to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy.
