Secretary of State Erdahl was the first incumbent to lose a reelection bid since Republican Virginia Holm in 1954 and the third in state history (also joining Democrat Francis Baasen in 1859).
Growe was a former teacher and a state Representative (HD 40A, 1973-1975) from Minnetonka.
Slater was an electrician from St. Paul and a former state Representative (HD 49, 1963-1965). He was nominated by petition.
