This was an open seat race as Governor LeVander was not a candidate for renomination.
Head was a Minneapolis attorney, former two-term state Representative (HD 30, 1961-1963; HD 38, 1963-1965), and sitting Attorney General (1967-1971).
Peterson was a resident of Duluth, GOP candidate for U.S. Senate in 1946 and governor in 1952, and DFL gubernatorial candidate in 1966.
Tarnowski was a homemaker from Chanhassen and GOP gubernatorial candidate in 1966.
