Associate Justice Nelson was reelected to a fourth term. Nelson resigned on January 3, 1972 to retire from public office. Governor Wendell Anderson appointed John Todd to fill the vacancy on January 3, 1972. Todd was an attorney from South St. Paul and part-time Minnesota Tax Court Judge (1965-1972).

Dressel was an attorney from Minnetonka, candidate for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1958, and nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1960, 1962, and 1964.
