Governor Freeman was reelected to a second term.
Nelson was a farmer from Hutchinson, former Lieutenant Governor (1953), and Administrator of the U.S. Rural Electrification Administration (1953-1956). He would later serve eight terms in the U.S. House (CD 02, 1959-1974).
Gustafson was a resident of Duluth and Industrial Government nominee for Governor in 1946, 1948, and 1960. He was nominated by petition.
