Hansen's victory ended the Republican winning streak for the office of Treasurer at eight in a row and 38 of the last 39 cycles.
Hansen was a farmer from Ulen and the DFL-endorsed candidate. He was a DFL candidate for Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner in 1950 and nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1952.
Lund was a resident of Staples and teacher of economics and political science at Staples High School. Lund was also the former state chairman of the Young Republican League and primary campaign manager for Governor C. Elmer Anderson in 1952.
