The election of Donovan ended a string of 48 consecutive elections since a Democrat last won election to the office of Secretary of State in Minnesota in 1857. Secretary of State Holm became second incumbent to lose at the ballot box for the office, joining Democrat Francis Baasen in 1859.
Donovan was a resident of Duluth and worked for a credit sales company.
