MacDonald was a resident of Minneapolis, member of the Hennepin County CIO Council, and candidate for the 5th CD in 1952 and 1954. MacDOnald was endorsed by the Progressive, pro-Wallace wing of the DFL party.
Eriksen was a real estate dealer from St. Paul and candidate for Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner in 1950's special election. He was endorsed by the establishment Truman-Humphrey wing of the DFL party.
