Youngdahl was an attorney from Minneapolis who had served as Assistant City Attorney of Minneapolis (1921-1924), Minneapolis Municipal Court Judge (1930-1936), and was a sitting associate justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court (1942-1946).
Petersen was an editor and publisher from Askov, a former state Representative (HD 56, 1931-1935), Farmer-Laborite Lieutenant Governor (1935-1936) and Governor (1936-1937), former Railroad and Warehouse Commissioner (1937-1943), and Farmer-Laborite gubernatorial candidate in 1938 and nominee in 1940 and 1942.
Hickenlooper was an electrician from Minneapolis and nephew of Iowa U.S. Senator and former Governor Bourke Hickenlooper.
