Murphy was an airline employee from Northfield and DFL nominee for Lieutenant Governor in 1950.
Johnson was an accountant from St. Paul. He was a Farmer-Labor candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 1940, the Farmer-Labor nominee for Treasurer in 1942, and a DFL candidate for Secretary of State in 1970.
Tinge was secretary of the DFL state committee and a resident of St. Paul. Tinge was the party-endorsed candidate in the race. He was also a DFL candidate for Lieutenant Governor in 1948.
