Clerk of the Supreme Court Gunderson became the third incumbent for this office to lose his party's nomination in a primary following Republicans Irving Caswell in 1918 and Herman Mueller in 1922. Gunderson did not allow his name to be placed for endorsement at the state convention.
Strout was a resident of St. Paul, statistician in the state Highway Department, and former state Budget Commissioner, and the party-endorsed candidate.
