Governor Hjalmar Petersen appointed Harry H. Peterson to to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Associate Justice Ingerval Olsen on December 15, 1936. Peterson was a resident of St. Paul, former Ramsey County Attorney (1923-1926), and former Attorney General (1933-1937).

Associate Justice Charles Loring was reelected to a third term. Loring was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court by Governor Edward Thye on January 4, 1944 following the resignation of Henry Gallagher on January 3, 1944. Governor Thye appointed former Associate Justice and New Ulm resident Thomas Stressguth in January 1944 to fill Loring's vacanct seat.

Peterson was an attorney from St. Paul, former Albert Lea High School principal, former Chaska Public Schools Superintendent, former professor, former assistant Attorney General, and nominee for Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1934.

Eastvold was an attorney from Ortonville, sitting state Representative (HD 48, 1933-1939), former Big Stone County Attorney (1927-1931), and DFL nominee for the 7th CD in 1950.
