This was a rematch of the top-two finishers of the 1934 GOP gubernatorial primary.
Nelson was an attorney from Austin and 1934 GOP gubernatorial nominee who would later become a state court district judge and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice (1953-1972).
Gilbert was a resident of Mound, president of the Recovery League of Minnesota, and 1934 GOP gubernatorial candidate.
