Attorney General Peterson was reelected to a third term defeating Youngdahl, a Minneapolis attorney, in a rematch of the 1934 election. Peterson did not serve out this term as he was appointed to the Minnesota Supreme Court by Farmer-Laborite Governor Hjalmar Petersen on December 15, 1936 to fill the seat of Justice I.M. Olsen who resigned due to failing health. Governor Petersen appointed Assistant Attorney General William Ervin to replace Attorney General Peterson.

Gallagher was a Minneapolis attorney who was later elected to the Minnesota Supreme Court where he served four terms (1943-1967).
