Youngquist was appointed to the office of attorney general by Governor Theodore Christianson on February 2, 1928 after the death of appointed Attorney General Albert Pratt.
Larson was an attorney from Minneapolis and former Benton County Attorney (1907-1908). He was a former three-time candidate for attorney general previously losing the Republican (1920, 1922) and Farmer-Laborite (1924) primaries.
